Kris made a face. Right, she had forgotten about the mind-reading thing. She never cared if Quartz did it, since she had nothing to hide from him. Ashen didn't seem like the type to go around listening in on surface thoughts, and if he was, she would have had to do quite a bit more explaining than she had. But that was a good reminder for her to watch what she thought. One more thing to be careful about, she supposed. Thoughts, words, actions...
He was right, though. She never really knew what Quartz was thinking. Often, he had told her that he didn't need her to do anything for him, just be there. He always acted like she would be the one to leave him, and never gave her any clues on what he wanted her to do if he left. "They aren't the ones being left behind all the time," she said in agreement.
With a sigh, she stood up. "I'm sorry for dumping all my problems on you. It's been a very bad month for me, and you've been so patient with me. I just want you to know I really appreciate it."

Kris turned to look at him, surprised. Friends? Really? Was it that easy? She glanced away, then took a few steps towards the door. "I should probably get my work done. I'll keep what you said in mind, though," she said, smiling hesitantly. Even though he had told her that he thought of her as a friend, she was still shy around him. It meant a lot to her, though she didn't want to make it seem that way. "Thank you again. I... uh... hope to see you around, I guess," she added awkwardly. It was obvious by now that Kris stumbled through the most basic of interactions, and saying goodbye was no different.

Kris watched him leave, sighing a bit, wishing she could stay around the roof a bit longer and stare at the sky. But she had work to do, or at least work that she should get done before she went home. She needed to do the filing for Ashen, but she also needed to check out how to apply for a job at the Archives. Hopefully she could get transferred. That would give her what she needed to start thinking about the next part of the plan, and then ...
Her mind full of thoughts of the future, she pulled open the door and walked through.
