"I, um...work..." She managed, after she recalled how to form words.
My goodness, Kandy, you do have a way with words!
"I mean, um, I run the um, pet shop. Magical Pet Emporium. It used to be Oliver's Magical Pet Emporium - that's my dad - but he retired and gave it to me and it would be just silly for me to run Oliver's Magical Pet Emporium! I'm not Oliver, at least not last time I checked, I wasn't! But I couldn't very well change it to Kandy's Magical Pet Emporium, because that's just mean! How would you feel if you owned something since forever and then someone else took it and changed the name like she was...claiming it?! Soo, I just left all the names out, so the next person doesn't have to worry about it like I did!" She gave a sharp exhale, slightly out of breath from how much she had said in such a short amount of time.
"What about you, Jac-ob?"

So she could speak, and fast at that. Jacob supposed she was talking so fast so she would forget how embarrassed she was.
Upon thinking of someone taking MAGI from him and putting their name on it, when he strictly avoided putting his name on it made his stomach turn. But he didn't doubt some people would do that, it's just the way the world was.
"Yeah, I'd hate it if someone took credit for something of mine. I mean, usually I don't care, but with inventions, that's part of me your taking credit for! My hard work and my sweat and soul! That's just low."
At her asking what he did, he once again fell back on his creed. Never lie to a lady.
"Oh I work with MAGI, I'm an inventor. It's pretty interesting work, really fun."
"Hey wait..." He said, thinking. "You work with animals? Like, magical animals? Carbuncles and Griphons and all that weird stuff? Wow, that's awesome! I've never seen most of those creatures."
And in truth, he hadn't. Nature wasn't one of his strong suits, and he didn't really do business with elves often, so he wasn't exposed to most animals that the average magic user might be.

Kandy nodded. So he worked for MAGI. That made sense. Only really wealthy people could live on the island; sometimes she wondered how her family ever afforded to set up shop there! The people at MAGI got paid a ton, didn't they? He must be really rich!
Naturally, she had no idea...
"Yeah, exactly! We have magical creatures like dwarf dragons - they're a real handful - but we have non-magical pets, too! Like puppies and kittens. So if you ever wanna see some stuff ya haven't seen before, you can always drop by! It's not all that far from here..." She trailed off, pondering over how he looked like someone she knew. And he was from MAGI, so he was probably really important! Just her luck! She didn't know any really important MAGI people, though.
Oh well, maybe it was just Deja Vu.
Yeah, she still wasn't connecting the dots...
"I don't know if I could do something like that! It seems really..." Boring. "...stressful! I don't think I have the patience! And aren't inventors shut off from everyone?" Kandy didn't need to have a million friends to be happy, but she genuinely liked being around people. People were lots of fun, and better yet, everyone was different! When she was working, there were always people coming and going.

He made a mental note to keep an eye out for the name of her business in his dealings. After all, what was a bit of money for a beautiful woman?
"Ah, some people see Inventing as boring, and I can't deny that it can seem that way, but look at it like this, you have the ability to make technology do things humans never dreamed possible. For someone who can't use magic, that's a pretty amazing thing." He said.
"Take it from me, designing and picking up a magical piece of technology for yourself is something people can really appreciate. I mean, when you make something, anything weather it be an impressive technology, a game, even a new recipe, you feel accomplished about it. That's the same idea, sure I fail sometimes, every experimenter does, that's part of the game. But really, failing just means you've gotta try harder next time. Plus sometimes it just feels like a really big jigsaw puzzle, you just need to match the pieces up right."
"And as for cut off from people, well there is a reason I choose to do my work outside in populated areas, why I get to meet all kinds of people!"

Kandy looked thoughtful. She could understand why he liked making things to help people, since that was basically the only reason she got into repairs, anyway. But as for sitting there, hour after hour, trial after trial, trying to make something to help people...she couldn't stand the thought of it! She didn't really like jigsaw puzzles, anyway!
"Oh, I see!" She nodded, as if suddenly understanding his 'madness.' "You get to shoot guns in populated areas, my, that does sound like a lot of fun!"
This guy is really weird!
She glanced at a confusing-looking watch she had on her wrist, checking to see how long she had before her lunch break was over. She hadn't exactly eaten, but a lot of the time she didn't, anyway. It was more fun to explore; she could always eat after work. Not all that much time had passed; she had about a half hour before she had to get back to work.

He noted her response and rubbed the back of his head again, a nervous habit, with a stupid grin on his face.
"Wait wait!" he said. "I need to rephrase that so it doesn't sound quite so crazy! I mean...ah hell, why do I even bother?" He said, raising his hands in defeat, his face was still a smile so she would know there were no hard feelings. "So how do you enjoy working with animals? To own a shop here, you must do some really good business. Owning a shop here is no small feat in itself."

"Oh, I enjoy my work very much! I truly love animals! The shop has been in my family for quite some time, really! My dad used to own-" Kandy paused, frowning. She had already said it was her dad's shop before hers, didn't she?! "Oh, I've said that already, haven't I?" She asked no one in particular, and gave a short, nervous little laugh.
"I'm just not very good at this talking business, am I? It's a lot easier when I'm working, but then it's a lot more boring, too! You just say the same things over and over! 'Hi, welcome to my shop, what would you like, have a nice day!'" She didn't appear to realize she was talking aloud; the manner of her conversation indicated that she was probably speaking exactly what she was thinking.
"Anyway, it's usually not very busy on days like this. We get the most customers on weekends, or closer to the time everyone else gets off work! I don't think we have any competition, either, and if we do, they must not be very good! I haven't heard of another pet shop...well, on the island, but you know what I mean! Right?"

"Not too good at talking? Why what do you mean? I find your company most pleasant." Nicholas said with a smile. "Competing pet shops? No, I haven't heard of any here." He added. "But to be fair, I never had a pet. I was always afraid a dog or cat would roll around in my notes or inventions and wreck them." He said, looking over the horizon for a moment.
"Ya know, locked up in that office, I kind of forget what a beautiful view there is from this island. It's our own little private paradise, but man oh man, it's breath taking when you stop to look at it."

Kandy beamed a thank you and nodded enthusiastically. "It is pretty, isn't it?" Sometimes she seemed almost too clueless...
"Oh! I know! Why don't you get a bird?" The half-elf suggested merrily. "Well, not a parrot, or anything, because they just don't shush! Maybe a pair of pretty little songbirds, so ya don't get lonely, but they're not annoying, either! And they can't mess up your notes or inventions!" She finished, grinning, obviously immensely proud of her idea.

"A bird eh? Yeah, that might be a good idea. Hmmm, well what kind of magical birds are there then?" He said, a bit interested now. This girl knew all about animals, and when you wanted something you should always go to the expert. "I'm not terribly sure about what is real and what is just a legend in this world, it gets kind of confusing. But you should know pretty well, don't you? After all, it's what you love to do!" He said with another stupid grin.

"Well, we have non-magical pets, too, but if you wanna hear about magical birds, then hear about magical birds you shall! The most popular magical bird is the Phoenix. The come in colors from gold to brown, and every hundred years, they burst into flame! And then they're reborn from the ashes again. They're very compassionate birds, and they're said to know just how their companions feel, but I suppose the ashes could require a bit of cleaning-up! If you happen to live long enough to see one enter it's stage of rebirth, anyway! The other birds are commonly thought to be regional takes on the phoenix, but that's just not true at all! They're actually all quite different! The 'Chinese phoenix' is called the 'Feng-huang.' They come in all kinds of pretty colors, and instead of chirping or cawing like your average bird, their call is a perfectly melodic song! They're supposed to bring peace and good luck!"
Kandy shifted her weight from foot to foot, giving the appearance that she was bouncing or dancing in place. Talking about magical creatures just got her so excited and happy! She loved sharing what she knew with other people, and since some people had the nerve to insult her intelligence, it just made it all the better when she did get to talk about what she knew. Those people ended up in the hospital, of course, but they deserved it! It's just rude to insult a lady like that!
"Let's see...there are Rocs, but they're huge, bigger than you are! Bigger than me standing on your shoulders, even, I don't know wherever you'd put one! The Firebird looks like a peacock that glows in the colors of autumn: red, orange, and yellow! It doesn't do very much but look pretty and really light things up, though! A Firebird's feather beats out any flashlight, for sure! Let's see..."
Kandy paused, tapping her index finger to her cheek as she considered other types of bird that she may have missed.

Nick noted how happy the girl got while she was talking about animals, she really was quite knowledgeable. As she talked about birds Nick got an idea, and betraying it his mouth curved into a smile. Now THAT was a good idea!
"Hmm, say, how smart is a Phoenix? Legends say they are brilliant animals, but legends and fact are two very different things." He cupped his hand in his chin. "While I am on the subject of that, do you sell birds that rare in your shop?"

"Oh, phoenixes are really quite intelligent, so that legend is true, for sure! They're really in touch with how their companion is fe-oh, I've said that, haven't I? Silly me! But they're more observant than anything! You can't teach a phoenix tricks, you know, they're very proud creatures! They don't like doing silly things just because someone told them to! I don't think I've ever seen one talk, either, but they're really...understanding, and loyal." Kandy nodded enthusiastically.
She gave a quick glance to her watch. She still had a little time, but she was definitely skipping lunch again, unless she skipped off right then! She'd probably have to bring it back to the shop, though, especially if there was a line, and she didn't like doing that. It made all the animals hungry, and that just disrupted their feeding schedules!
"We do have magical birds! But because they're really rare, they are quite pricey! Because they're quite pricey, we usually don't stock that many of them at a time; not a lot of people can afford them! You won't find a roc at my shop, just because they're so huge I just wouldn't know where to keep one! We have a phoenix, just one, he's been with us for a good while, the poor guy! The last phoenix left ages ago, but we always keep one, just in case! Uumm..." She stopped again, doing that little tap-finger-to-cheek motion that showed she was thinking. "Oh, I think I've lost my words! Let's see...magical birds...phoenixes...in my shop...oh, got it! We don't have any Firebirds right now, but if we don't have the kind of bird our customers are looking for, we can order them pretty quick! Oh, we do have a Feng-huang on the way, yes? I'm fairly certain...yes, I do believe that's the one we ordered! He should be arriving in a day or two, once the people sending him get all their stuff sorted out!"

Nick tried very hard to absorb all the information. "Wow, you really know your stuff about animals." He said, not able to remove his gaze of astonishment from his face. She was just as smart as him, except about something entirely different. Nicholas was wise enough to respect people with different kinds of intelligence then his own.
He did see her check her watch and put it together, it was a work day, she probably did have to get back to her shop. "Oh! Looks like a bit of time has passed." He said in surprise. "I better get running back to the office before they think I swiped the prototype!" He exclaimed, while gathering up the prototype and packing it away. "I might just take you up on that offer for a bird Kandy, we'll see. I hope I'll see you again, would that be ok?"
It was a rhetorical question, but he figured she would answer it anyway.

"No, I'm just going to bar up all the doors and windows to keep you out!" She informed with a straight face and a cheerful smile. The rare times that she spoke sarcastically (she preferred to call it 'playfully'), she never strayed from her constantly-happy demeanor.
If the pleasant sarcasm playfulness had managed to confuse her new friend like it had practically everyone else, she'd have to clear it up by bursting into a fit of giggles. And she did. The pink-haired woman could not keep a straight face for a full minute after that. She was too busy boarding-up shop! Why, that would take an awful long time to do, and it couldn't be good for business!
"Of course it is, silly! Bye, Jacob! See ya later!" She gave him a quick wave, turned on her heel, and headed back the way she came. She really ought to grab something to eat before break was over!
