"I'm eighteen. I graduated just last year, now I work at the hospital...what about you?" She knew he looked young, like a lower-year student, but she wouldn't tell him so. He looked young because he was short, petite. A pixie couldn't help how he was born. He could be in his last years, but only small in stature. It would be very rude of her to assume, especially if she was wrong.
Oh no...I already assumed he was a student! What if I was wrong? I'd hurt his feelings! I don't want to upset anyone...
People often assumed that she was a few years younger than she was, because she was so dainty. When people guessed her age incorrectly, she didn't like it. If people thought she was younger than she really was, they would sometimes treat her condescendingly. They'd treat her like she was ignorant and uneducated. Like her opinion didn't matter. Like she was irresponsible. Her motto was 'treat others the way you want to be treated.' If people were being so mean to her, they must'nt have been treated very well themselves! Maybe she should be nice to them, too?

"Ah.. you are a bit older then me.." Demetri said with a nod."I'm sixteen and I'm in my third year at Academy of Thaumaturgy..." Demetri said with a small smile. He didn't care when people got his age wrong, it happened to often for him to care anymore. He switch his sitting position as he did often at times. His knees were touching as he sat but he was sitting flat to the ground as he legs were flat off to the sides. He had his hands on his lap lightly...This was a common way for him to sit, he was pretty flexible...

Wow, he's only two years younger than me! I wouldn't have thought...good thing I didn't guess!
Naolin gave Demi a soft smile, but was unable to keep eye contact for long. Wasn't it rude to stare? She kept quiet until a particularly strong gust of wind blew her long hair all up in her face, and she made a sound of protest that sounded like a cross between a gasp and a squeak. Hurriedly, she brushed as much as she could behind her ears, but it remained messy in appearance.
That was embarrassing. I bet I looked really weird...
"You're lucky you don't have hair this long!" She told Demi's feet, which were turned some odd way. "Does it hurt to sit like that?" She pulled her knees together and brought them to her chest, but couldn't bring herself to imitate how his feet were positioned. What if she messed up and hurt herself?

"well you could have short hair if you wanted to.." Demetri said with a smirk. His hair was hidden under the cover of his hat, his hat covered most of his white hair. when the wind blew by he had grabbed the rim of his hat. Was the wind going to continue to blow like this, his hat probably wouldn't fly off but he had had it happen before and it was hard to catch with a good gust and what if it were to land in the water. Demetri hated flying over water. His attentino was caught back as she spoke. He looked to his feet slightly before looking to her."No...I'm pretty flexible I guess.." Demetri said with a shrug...

"I could, but I've had long hair since I was little. It'd be weird to have it short when it never has been. I guess it's my own fault." Naolin admitted, completely missing the pixie's smirk. "Ponytails don't stay up for me, either. They kind of...flop. I guess I'm not very good with hair." When she was talking, she shifted her feet into the same position Demi had his in without even realizing it.
Hats are itchy but headbands are okay. Maybe I should get one of those for windy days...
Out of the corner of her eye she spotted two young girls in bathing suits, putting together a castle made of sand. It was a very good castle, with sea shells lining the bottom for a decorative touch. The towers looked so convincing...she'd never seen anything like it before. "That looks fun." She commented absently, and tried to imitate their castle by piling sand on top of sand. The grains slipped between her fingers and landed as they were, unable to stay together without being dampened and packed. "How does it stay up?"

"hmm..I see, well i've never had long hair so I guess we are even.." Demetri said with a smile. "that's strange you would think someone with long hair would be somewhat good with it." Demetri commented as he noticed her look over to the girls on the beach. He watched her imitate them, well just becuase he hadn't been her before doesn't mean he didn't know how things worked." You have to get the sand wet..." Demetri said looking to her...

"I never really gave my hair as much attention as I gave other things. Schoolwork, my hobbies, helping around the house...I brush it, but other than that, I don't think I can even braid." She smiled nervously, as if afraid that this revelation would bring her ridicule. It was true, of course; she never saw why girls loved make-up and making strange shapes of their hair the way they did. It seemed a selfish thing to do. The motive was all to make people like them better, right? Why not spend that time doing something to help others? If people didn't think they were pretty enough already, maybe they needed to find some nicer people.
"Oh really?" She replied dazedly when she heard him say the sand needed to be wet if she wanted to mold it. Unlike the pixie, she had never seen nor heard of a sandcastle nor how to make one before. She was absolutely mystified that he would know how to create one, despite the fact that he had never been to the beach.
She glanced over to the girls and their sandcastle, and saw one holding what looked like a small orange bucket. She blinked in confusion when the girl flipped it over, creating an instant castle tower. "Oh...I see..." She nodded after a moment. The bucket was ridged at the bottom, so it would be more castle-like when filled and flipped. "I think I'd like to try that sometime, but I don't have the tools...wouldn't you?"

"Hmm... same here.. I brush my hair of course though.. "Demetri said with a small smile. "Braids are ahrd.. a ot of people told me so.." Demetri said wih a nod. He had never tried seeing as he didn't really have enough hair for it. She watched her as she watched the girls build a sand castle. "Well it does look like fun... i don't know.." Demetri said with a shrug. He wasn't one who liked to act like a kid as he didn' like being mistaken for one."I don't have a bucket or anything sorry.."

"Me neither..." Naolin wiggled her basket to show she had no tools inside. "I don't think anything in here is going to help much." She admitted, referring to her work clothes and sandals. "But you know...I think I'll try it anyway. Not everyone uses those things, do they? I'm sure I can make a nice sandcastle without them. One with a moat...I'll just try not to get my dress wet."
The restorer put her basket down near Demi, gave him a little wave, and moved closer to where the water licked the shore. She drew a big 'u' with her fingertips, opening toward the water, and then put another, smaller 'u' inside of it. Her outline made, she began to dig the sand out of the moat, making room for the water it was to hold. Unfortunately, she got too close to the water, and it kept erasing her work.

Demetri nodded as he looked to her basket the watched her stand. He smirked a bit as he could tell she was having a bit of trouble. He stod up and walked over to her, he wasn't much of a flyer unless it was a crowded area or he wanted to get somewhere high. "You have to move back a bit or dig it deeper.." Demetri said as he got closer to her but not to close...

Naolin glanced back at the pair of girls for advice. They had a little wall surrounding their moat. Their castle's moat went around in a circle, and had a vertical part down the middle leading to the water. It wasn't the same design, but it was the same idea, right? Maybe I should try that. She pondered. The wall can keep the water away.
She picked up a handful of sand and put it down in front of her moat. The tide swallowed it up. That's no good, the water'll just take it down again.
And then there was Demi with his expert advice. Digging deeper seemed like it would be the harder option. She'd have to race against the water so it didn't undo her work. But moving back...she glanced at the two girls and their castle again for confirmation. Their moat just touched where the water met the sand.
"Oh. Oops..." She mumbled, and took three steps back where she would try again.

Demetri watched her as she was trying new ways to do it, but they were all seeming to fail her. He was glad she had taken his advice from how she reacted it seemed one of the two made sence. He smirked lighty from where he stood, even when she moved back a bit he was still farther then her from the water. He had never liked water. One, he couldn't swim and two, it isn't the best thing to get your wings wet. That could be pretty messy, waiting for them to dry was no fun at all. He would help her but he really didn't feel like getting sandy...

Naolin didn't mind the sand or the water, though the trim of her dress was getting damp and dirty. She would be changing soon, anyway, so she was fine with getting a little messy. The worst that could happen was she'd get sandy, and there was water nearby to wash it off. The sun could dry the water. Now, if she was playing in mud, it would be a different story. She'd never get all cleaned up in time for work!
Her moat was progressing much better now, since she'd moved further away from the water. Her hands were covered in sand, and some was lodging under her nails, but she trusted the water would take care of it. She was about halfway done with the moat when she stopped to look up at Demi. He was being so quiet that she thought he'd lost interest and wandered off.
"Oh...you're still there?" She directed to him, taking a short break from moat-digging to shake the sand off her hands. "You're really quiet..." She gave her moat a thoughtful look. It was coming along quite nicely, and hadn't get been swallowed up by the tide. It wasn't outstandingly deep, nor was it shallow, and it was a bit crooked despite the outline she made for it.
"You can help if you want to." She offered, assuming that it must feel strange, standing there saying nothing, doing nothing, just watching her dig.

Demetri watched her curiously wondering how she herself would do this. He liked to watch people and see how they did things differently from others. It was what made all people different and it was a wonderful quality. He looked to her as she spoke, he blushed slightly. "I'm sorry..I've always been a quiet person... "demetri said with a light smile as he looked to her. He felt a bit embarassed at the moment for some reason, he had always been quiet. You would think a small person would want to be heard but he would rather remain hidden. "Um.. no thank you.." He said looking to her. "I don't want to get to close to the water.." He said as he looked at the water a bit wide eyed as a bit of fear lingered in his sight...

"That's okay." Naolin insisted as she finished digging out her moat. "I'm pretty quiet, too. Always have been, when I was younger, when I was school...and now. People think that I'm strange. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I'm quiet...but a lot of people are quiet, aren't they?"
She didn't want to think that there might be something wrong with her that made people see her as peculiar. She didn't want to think it was the way she looked or acted, or sounded. But it had to be so, didn't it? If that many people thought she was strange, surely it couldn't be the people who were thinking it that were strange. It had to be her, something about her.
Maybe it was because she lived on the streets and slept in gardens. Maybe it was her unnatural fear of the dark and all things lurking in it. Maybe it was her unusual degree of politeness. Maybe it was the rumor that a jealous wife spread about her trying to 'seduce' her husband. Of course, it couldn't be further from the truth; Naolin wouldn't know seduction if it danced right in front of her.
"You don't like to get wet? Are you afraid of water?" She asked out of curiosity. The restorer didn't think before she spoke, and the moment she realized she had made such an inquiry she blushed in embarassment. It would not do for her to assume things about people, like what they were afraid of. It would only lead to misunderstandings. She might have offended him! "I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to maybe suggest that...I mean...uh...I don't know, I shouldn't assume, just because..."
Naolin, I'm ashamed of you! That was so rude! You don't know that he's afraid of water, maybe he just can't swim...oh, there you go again! Making assumptions! What would mother and father say?!
