Tiga walked up to the front desk, feeling slightly apprehensive. After all, this was her first time applying for a job. She smoothed her left hand over her black jacket, and adjusted her shoulder bag with her right hand. "Excuse me," she began to the person behind the front desk. "I'm here to apply for a diplomat's position, and I'm not quite sure of where to go...I was wondering if you could direct me?"

A young looking purple-haired woman, wearing rainbow-coloured glasses and a flower on her ear, looked up at Tiga with a sweet smile. "Diplomat? I'm afraid we're quite full in that field. No room at all for another Diplomat. No no."
She shook her head violently and shuffled her papers around with gusto as she spoke these words in her strange and high-pitched voice. Eventually slowing in her movements and then drawing to a halt outright, she glanced around the lobby as if to make sure no one was watching. Of course, in the busy headquarters of Thaumaturgy International, there were plenty of people watching, but she didn't seem to care.
"But just between you and me, I'm willing to squeeze you in. Are you qualified?"
Her hands paused over the keyboard in front of her, waiting for a response before continuing.

Tiga was slightly startled at the woman's apparent (if conspiratorial) willingness to let her take part in a full field, but nevertheless she thought through her qualifications.
"Well, I studied diplomacy and its related courses at the Academy," Tiga began. "I graduated recently, so I have credentials in diplomacy skills, various languages, socialogy, anthropology, some psychology...those are the main courses I studied." She paused, collecting her thoughts, then went on.
"I also have field experience, long-standing and recently. I used to negotiate and solve problems in my clan, before I left to study at the Academy. Mostly small stuff--kid stuff--but good practice. Later on, I did conflict resolution services for residents in my Academy dorm. Teenage emotional drama can get really out of hand sometimes, but I managed to cut down on it some. Just recently I negotiated parties in a club fight."
Tiga looked up hopefully. "So, those are my credentials. Do you have any other questions?"

The woman began mashing the keyboard manically as Tiga listed her qualifications, but she seemed to be disappointed in the result as she stared at the computer screen in front of her with a frown. So she instead found a pencil and began taking notes on the back of one of the many pages in front of her, using long, exaggerated strokes coupled with furious scribbling. Her tongue spent a good deal of time stuck out of her mouth in concentration. The constant note-taking was occasionally interrupted by a 'mhm', or a 'yes', or a 'oh, that's quite nice'.
When Tiga finished speaking, the woman looked expectantly up at her, pencil poised and ready, as if waiting for the next part of her speech. She appeared, after a pause, to realize that Tiga was indeed done speaking and placed the pencil back upon the desk with flair.
"Right then. No questions, no. Just let me feed the application into the computer..."
The woman inserted Tiga's qualifications into a slot in the computer. Or so she appeared to.
In reality, the paper simply housed a portrait of Tiga holding a flower that looked like it had been drawn with crayons by a five-year-old. How did the woman manage to draw in colour with just a pencil? Who knows. Why did stuffing the drawing into the disc tray of the computer cause an official-looking document stating Tiga was officially employed to be spat out of a printer nearby? More mysteries.
The woman grabbed the document from the printer and turned to face Tiga again, but she ended up looking right past her and froze.
"Right then! You've got the job, it's official!" She walked around the desk to where Tiga stood and handed her the paper. "You start next week." She turned around a sign on the desk so that it said 'Out to Lunch'. "Now, I'm afraid you must be going." She shooed Tiga along in front of her and out the front doors of the building just as a far more official-looking secretary returned from the general direction of the cafeteria with a coffee and a muffin, and sat down with a confused look at the mess of papers on her desk. With a shrug, she flipped the sign back 'round the right way and settled in for an afternoon of work.
If Tiga bothered to turn around after being swept out the doors, she would notice that the purple-haired woman had disappeared into thin air, though an eccentric looking man with a similar hair colour and a tantalizingly familiar flower on his flamboyant top hat was walking away in the opposite direction, whistling a tune to himself.

Tiga just blinked at first, but a grin slowly plastered itself across her face. Then, looking at the paper in her hand, she jumped in a spinning circle and took off skipping towards the beach.
It was time to celebrate properly.
