Torin DeInnes stands at the lectern, smiling benevolently as students quietly file in. When they have all settled, he begins.
"All right. Today's lecture topic is the the history of TI.
As I'm sure mostly everyone is aware, the main purpose of Thaumaturgy International is to preserve the Veil. But there was a time when it was unnecessary for a governing body to do this; magical beings were wise enough to know for themselves that breaking the Veil was an unpleasant idea. This was a very long time ago though, before Humans like me even knew magic. In fact, much of the reason magical beings were so united in keeping the Veil intact was so that humans would not learn magic. They thought it would be disastrous if us 'barbarians' could use magic as well.
The peace lasted for a long time. Back in those early days, The Aretas Immortalis Cult was very peaceful, and lawful, and was actually a generally accepted religion. The vampires refrained from turning any humans, and killed any that were accidentally turned. The lycans existed in such small numbers at this time that they weren't even the slightest annoyance to the vampire race. The elves, pixies, goblins, and dwarves existed peacefully, demons were unheard of, Djinn minded their own business, and humans were blissfully unaware of the existence of all the other beings.
But one of the members of the AIC got greedy, and decided that the ancient texts that warned of the danger of summoning Aretas to this realm were actually just warning of the danger to his enemies, and that his followers would be rewarded handsomely. Knowing that the magical races in general would not be happy with the course of action he wished to take, he tried to enlist the help of a secret weapon that the others could not match; the humans. Or, to be more specific, the Lycans.
This AIC member, whose name is unknown, convinced the Lycan population to join his side, with the promise of great power and respect that they had never received from the other races, especially the pompous vampires, who looked down upon them as animals. The AIC member became leader through means unknown, likely by killing the current leader, and led the Lycan Rising.
The Lycan Uprising is a tall tale, and will be saved for another lecture, but the gist of it is that the lycans began secretly turning humans at an alarming rate, amassing forces larger than the other species could ever muster. Through coercion and convincing, they recruited them all to the AIC's cause.
Around this time, the new leader of the AIC politely asked the vampires in the Council of Elders if he could have their sacred artefact to help him with the summoning of Aretas. When he was politely refused and thrown out of the building, the Council learned that asking had only been Plan A; the large lycan force had found its way to the coven with the help of a vampire in the Cult. One of the bloodiest conflicts in history took place then; the lycans fighting for their honour and their beliefs, the vampires fighting for their home and their very lives."
Just then, the bell rings.
"Okay, that's all for today. Tomorrow's lecture will continue on from where I left off."
