The World:
The world of Thaumaturgy International is not all that different from our own world. Well, there are elves and pixies and magic and magi-tech and…
Okay, I never said they were the same thing.
Once upon a time, there were magical races in the world. They lived in relative harmony with one another, as magical races have a tendency to do. Admittedly there were border wars. And the goblins and dwarves aren't exactly drinking buddies. Still, things were pretty good for them.
However, humans eventually discovered the magical races, more through their amazing ability to increase like rabbits than anything. This is where you traditional happy fairy tale stories came from. I know, fun right? Well, the humans wanted in on the action too, so they started learning.
Now, every once and a while, a child is born “special.” They might be able to move things with their mind. Maybe they can read thoughts. Maybe they can cast spells. Whatever it is, they are different from the rest of the world. These children become aware of a new world, our world.
The world of Thaumaturgy International.
The Organization:
Thaumaturgy International. "TI".
Basically they’re the UN of the Magical World, to quote their head-honcho. In reality, they act as the police, the army, the judical system, and the government for all of us magical folk. Nearly everyone who graduates from the Academy goes on to work for TI… or the Academy… or themselves.
They have their hands in a lot of stuff in our world. The banks are under them. They fund the school (which means that they sign my paycheck… bummer).
But basically they’re there to protect the Veil.
The Veil:
Would be the thing that keeps most normal people from knowing magic exists. There's some sort of mental defect in non-magical beings that makes them tend to ignore magic. Let me put it this way: you’re far more likely to think I’m able to dodge bullets than that I magically made myself intangible for a few seconds. You’re also willing to believe I’ve discovered ancient Chinese medicine too, I’d bet… (I haven't, I just found the Fountain of Youth)
At any rate, what’s keeping the normal humans from getting the drift is the Veil. It sort of acts as a cloaking device for us. Of course, if you’re stupid enough to go throwing massive fireballs at people… well, that’s noticeable…
And generally frowned upon.
You’d have to try to really shatter the veil though. Honestly, most of us don’t go around doing it. Now, if you’re some religious nutjob…
Aretas Immortalis Cult:
Those would be the “bad guys.” Basically they’re a bunch of whack-jobs that want to summon the demon king Aretas into this world to do what demon king have a tendency to do.
In fact, they’re willing to break the veil to accomplish just that. Which is not a good thing. At all.
Technology:
To begin with, there is the normal technology you’re probably used to. Computers, the Wheel, the Internet, MP3s, tanks, beer, cars, cell phones. All that exists. And is readily used by the residents of the magical world, in fact. Heck, I need my computer… err… for my job, of course.
And technology actually gets along fairly well with magic. Occasionally you'll see people using guns and computers and whatnot for their vessel.
There is this thing called “magi-tech” but if I talk too much about it, I get sued. I don’t like being sued. Ask the head honcho of the magi-tech corporation.
