Michael walked through the halls, occasionally poking his head into the classrooms. After all, it was his job to monitor things that went on in the school, and he really needed the exercise anyway. Gotta keep in shape, after all.
The Dean could almost pass for a student himself, with his casual way of dressing. Sports coat through over dress shirt over jeans. Nothing too fancy, but enough to pass for authority. Besides, if he tried any harder, someone would get suspicious.
Michael poked a head into another classroom, nodded, then reentered the hall. Hopefully everything was going well and he wouldn't be needed for anything...

Not needed, per se, but Umi definitely would enjoy an intelligent conversation for once. For some reason, it seemed as though many of his classmates were completely unable to have a decent chat without getting bored. It was as if half the student body had ADD. How queer.
So when Umi, who had a period off, saw the dean in the hall not far from him, he pushed aside his normal tendency to not speak unless spoken to. He felt as though, even if he didn't know the man well, he at least knew of him, and that was excuse enough to make conversation.
"Hello, Dean Mosley. Keeping an eye out for trouble?"

"Trouble, misbehaving, childish antics," Michael responded before he even turned to see who he was addressing. Already a smile was on his face, and he nodded to the student, trying to remember exactly who it was he was talking to. His gut said Kai or something similiar. Why these kids needed to have exotic names...
"You know me, gotta make sure everything's running smoothly. Ship-shape and all that," Michael nodded again, sticking his hands in his pockets. He then eyed Kai with a serious look. "You're not cutting class or something, are you? I know we just started, but you have to get serious..."

Umi was a little hurt by the indirect and probably not serious accusation that he was doing something wrong, but he didn't show it. He stuffed his hands into the pocket of his jacket and avoided the Dean's eyes.
"No, Dean Mosley, I am not. I do not have a class right now," he said quietly, with a little shrug. He was pretty put-off, and considered leaving, regretting haven spoken in the first place. But of course, he could not do so until he was finished speaking with the Dean. That would be rude to anyone, let alone a figure of authority.

Michael smiled, reaching over to pat Kai on the back.
"Of course you don't," he replied, winking, "but I have to check anyway."
The last thing the dean wanted was to hurt someone's feelings, even a "lowly" student. After all, the well-meaning half-elf hadn't wanted to hurt Kai's feelings. He was just "doing his job."
"So, what's up, Kai?" Michael sincerely hoped that was actually part of the student's name, and not some random label he'd plucked out of his mind...

Umi flinched slightly at the pat on the back; it wasn't exactly hard, but he was like a twig. He was all set to accept the fact that this man cared nothing for him until it turned out that he actually remembered his name. That was pretty impressive in his books; he had barely met the man before and he was sure there were plenty of names to get to know. Umi took the fact that his was one he remembered as a good sign and cheered up quickly.
"I am just going for a walk, Dean Mosley. The halls are usually nice and quiet on my off period; it is a nice change of pace," he answered, still quietly but with considerably more cheer. He even manages a small, shy smile. "What is up with you? Besides hall monitoring and chasing after beautiful elves..." he said slyly, voice trailing off.
It was a common rumour among the students that the Dean was crushing big time on the President, but in saying this Umi had been attempting at telling a joke, having assumed it actually was just a rumour and nothing more.

Of course Michael knew that the students knew that he was crushing on the President. It actually pleased the dean to know that they cared that much. Or at least wanted to gossip about the faculty.
"You pretty much got it in two," Michael admitted, smiling, "though I'd like to add 'inventing useful stuff' to that list."
The dean beamed at the student.
"You going anywhere in particular? No, wait, let me guess, you don't want to be seen with me, right?" Michael looked around, as though he expected someone to hop out and denounce them.

Umi was not sure what to make of the Dean's response; was he taking the joke in stride or was he actually chasing after President Galatea? He concluded that he really didn't want to know, and that it was truly none of his business anyway. As long as they didn't both quit their jobs and elope, leaving Umi without his education, then he would be fine.
"You invent things? I can not understand how people can do that; I just do not seem to be able to wrap my head around technology," he admitted. "But it sure is a useful skill to have."
He was sort of puzzled as to why the Dean would think he wouldn't want to be seen with him. Wasn't the Dean labelled as 'cool'? Umi didn't care about that sort of thing anyway, but the only reason he could see for anyone to not want to be seen with him was that he wasn't 'cool'.
"No, I am just wandering around. And you are probably better company than a lot of the students here anyway," he commented offhandedly. Certainly more bright than some, anyway.

Michael nodded, "Yes, I invent things. I came up with a machine that sent out waves of nausea."
Of course this description made hand motions necessary, and Michael moved his hands back and forth in a waving motion.
"The idea was that people could use it to get temporally sick therefore missing things they didn't want to go to," he paused, realizing how that sounded. "At any rate, it ended up having a faulty component: wouldn't stop giving off nauseous waves. Most unpleasant."
He smiled at the joke. It was much easier to smile now, a few months after the incident, then it had been at the time. You couldn't very well smile when you were clutching the toilet for dear life.
"And I'm sure there's a few students worth associating with, though I suppose I'm good enough company," he winked at Kai. "You ought to find yourself a nice girl though. Much better to look at."

Umi nodded dumbly at the explanation. He had no idea waves of nausea could be sent out in the air, especially not by a machine. Why would anyone want to do that?
...
To miss things they didn't want to go to? Puzzling.
"You mean like skip class? Are you not supposed to be stopping that sort of thing?" he asked, his tone far more curious than accusing.
"You are right though, not all the students are bad company," he admitted, thinking of people like Demi. He didn't say anything to the girl comment, but he did flush red a little.
